Barney's Big Weekend

Barney spent Saturday night of Labor Day with a friend while we were staying downtown.  When we picked him up he was very excited to see us but then Heather told us that he'd been throwing up that morning starting at about 8am.  When we got him home he continued to have issues with vomitting. I called our Vet number and they did not have a Vet on call that weekend so they referred us to the VRCC. When I finally broke down and called  again about 4 hours into his issues they said we should definitely bring him in.  I sat in the back with him and he was a very melancholy puppy.

After we got checked in and the Vet Tech did an initial assesment of his vitals. She then left the room and Garrett and I had the displeasure of seeing Barney vomit up blood. At that point they told us he would need to stay overnight. They would try and feed him in 8 hours. They put him on an IV to keep him hyrdrated and gave us a list of tests and things they would need to do. In order to check him in we needed to approve the list and the costs associated with it.  After picking my jaw up off the ground and shelling out the equivalent of a mortgage payment we left our puppy in very good hands. I was a pregnant emotional mess and Garrett did his best to reassure me. It might have been better if they hadn't handed me his collar after they checked him in.  We did get to go back to the area he would be staying in and say goodbye for the night. Again...emotional mess.   They called us a few hours later and said that he was doing much better and that we could call and check on him in the morning.  We were finally able to pick Barney up at about 4pm on Monday afternoon and when they called his name over the intercom Barney even perked up upon hearing his name. He's so smart. :) It was a couple days before our puppy returned to his normal self but after keeping him hydrated with pedialyte and small ice chips and a diet of boiled chicken and rice (and lots of meds) Barney started playing with toys and returned to his normal self.

We still don't know for sure what caused it. We believe it was something he ate right before we brought him to Heather's.  Barney grabbed something from under the pine tree in the front yard. Cat poop, dog poop, a small dead animal...we're not sure.  Barney is no longer given the benefit of the doubt that he will jump right into the back seat and will be leashed anytime he's not in the back yard. We also bought a gentle leader for his nose so that he doesn't pull so much on walks but also so that he doesn't have the ability to quickly gobble something up on walks.  Hoping these small adjustments make a big difference and end up saving us money on emergency vet services.
